A
public and private partnership using local decisions to help prevent
homelessness and assist the hungry
The
Emergency Food and Shelter Program is administered by United Way of
America on the national level and by the United Way of Wexford County
through a local board. Each year thousands of dollars in federal funding
are disbursed to local agencies that offer programs meeting basic human
needs such as food, shelter, utilities.
Local
EFSP funding is based on unemployment, income and population. The local
Board is chaired by the United Way of Wexford County and includes representatives
of county government, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Homeless Advocate,
the Family Independance Agency, Faith based representatives, and others
involved with emergency services to families.

The
local EFSP Board is responsible for assessing the food and shelter needs
in the community, making funding decisions, reporting to the Emergency
Food and Shelter National Board Program on the use of funding, developing
an application and appeals process, advertising funding availability,
and monitoring the program.

for Phase 23 Funding have been accepted by the United Way of Wexford
County. Deadline for accepting applications: January 11, 2005.
Friday,
January 21: The Wexford County Emergency Food & Shelter Board is
meeting at the Rathert Building in Cadillac from 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. to
review applications, meet with agency representatives, and to make funding
award decisions.
